The Old Ironworks – A Symbol of Industrial Identity and a New Beginning
The Old Ironworks is one of the most recognizable industrial monuments in Carinthia and across Slovenia. As a symbol of four centuries of ironmaking tradition, it represents the heart of Ravne na Koroškem’s industrial identity. Since 2002, when the company Metal Ravne transferred the area to the Municipality of Ravne na Koroškem free of charge, which then entrusted its management to the Carinthian Regional Museum, this unique site has gradually evolved into a platform for innovation, creativity, and collaboration.
The renovated Old Ironworks opened its doors on 7 October 2025. The €1.6 million restoration successfully preserved the authenticity and grandeur of the industrial monument, while also incorporating new features that connect the past with the future. Today, the site combines the rich ironmaking heritage with a vision for sustainable economic, tourism, cultural, and social development in the region. Industrial heritage is recognized as a tangible potential for new investments, product development, job creation, and the cultivation of skills for the future.
