Today in the spotlight: MATEJ JEREB-SEDEJ, Project Manager, Iskriva Institute.

Matej in Three Words
Curious, calm, precise.

What motivates you most in your work at Iskriva Institute?
What motivates me most is the opportunity to turn ideas into tangible results within spaces and communities. I am driven especially by the fact that projects are not an end in themselves, but become tools for sustainable development, connecting people, and creating long-term impacts—whether at the local or international level.

Which project you co-create at Iskriva Institute do you believe has the greatest impact on society and the environment?
The projects that leave a lasting mark on the physical space have the greatest impact. For me, this is primarily the development and gradual revitalization of the Old Ironworks area in Ravne na Koroškem. Such projects not only transform the physical environment but also influence the identity of the place, the local community, and the way people think about future development.

What are the three key factors for effective project management in practice?

  1. Clear understanding of the broader context – A project is never an end in itself; it must respond to the real needs of the space and the people it serves.

  2. Ability to connect stakeholders – Different partners have different interests, so it is essential to find a common denominator and build trust.

  3. Consistency in execution – A good idea without systematic management will not deliver results.

How do you establish and maintain effective collaboration among diverse project stakeholders?

By identifying shared interests and setting clear goals. It is important that every stakeholder understands their role and added value. Open communication, ongoing coordination, and seeking solutions that are sustainable in the long term for all parties are key. Partnerships should be based not only on formal obligations but also on trust and a shared developmental ambition.

Which book or podcast have you recently read or listened to and would recommend to everyone?

I recently read Mojih 33 odprav (My 33 Expeditions) by the renowned Slovenian mountaineer Viki Grošelj, an exceptionally personal and honest story in which the author shares not only his achievements but also relationships, doubts, responsibility, and gratitude. Occasionally, before bed, I also enjoy listening to the podcast Globalna vas (Global Village) by the Slovenian national radio which explores the lives of Slovenian expatriates. The podcast broadens my horizons in a light-hearted way, introduces fascinating stories from around the world, and often gives me new ideas for travel or vacations.
